Berlinale Selection 2025 is the sixth edition of the film series organized by the Goethe-Institut Cyprus, presenting current German cinema in Cyprus. This year’s programme includes a selection of six films that were shown at the Berlinale 2024 and 2023. Screenings at Pantheon in Nicosia . The event is supported by the Friends of Cinema Society.

Berlin, 1942. Hilde is madly in love with Hans. They enjoy a wonderful summer together. She becomes involved in a resistance group and her life is in constant danger. Pregnant Hilde is arrested and imprisoned. There she anticipates the birth of her son and reflects on her life with Hans.

Katharina Pethke becomes professor at Hamburg’s University of Fine Arts, where both her mother and grandmother had studied. This becomes a catalyst for reflection and research. Reproduction directed by established filmmaker Katharina Pethke, examines the ideal images of women in art, explores questions of identity, and looks at power and gender relations across three generations of women who are artists and mothers.

An incredibly funny and deeply moving film that deals with growing up under unusual circumstances. Joachim is the youngest son of the director of one of Germany’s largest psychiatric hospitals. He spends his childhood and adolescence on the grounds of the psychiatric hospital, as their family home is located on the premises. To Joachim, the patients are like family.

The Empty Grave (Das leere Grab)

The Empty Grave sheds light on a neglected chapter of history: German colonial crimes in Africa and their still palpable consequences. In the late 19th century, the skulls of murdered Africans were brought to Germany, where they remain in collections and museums – largely unacknowledged and rarely discussed. The film offers an intense, personal perspective on the global debate around repatriation and the ongoing suffering of descendants of colonial violence.

Ivo works as a palliative home-care nurse. Every day, she visits families, couples and single people. They live in small flats and large houses. They all have different lives and deaths. They all have different ways of dealing with the time that remains. One of her patients, Solveigh, was a close friend even before her illness. Ivo also has a close relationship with Solveigh's husband Franz. Day after day, they work together to care for Solveigh.
